This volume brings together some of the most exciting new scholarship on these themes, and thus pays tribute to the ground-breaking work of Charles Zika. Seventeen interdisciplinary essays offer new insights into the materiality and belief systems of early modern religious cultures as found in artworks, books, fragmentary texts and even in Protestant ‘relics’. Some contributions reassess communal and individual responses to cases of possession, others focus on witchcraft and manifestations of the disordered natural world. Canonical figures and events, from Martin Luther to the Salem witch trials, are looked at afresh. Collectively, these essays demonstrate how cultural and interdisciplinary trends in religious history illuminate the experiences of early modern Europeans. La dévotion à la Mère de Dieu a produit dans tous les domaines de l?art et de la pensée des monuments qui comptent parmi les plus beaux et les plus émouvants des derniers siècles du Moyen Age. Les journées d?études organisées en octobre 2013, sur les représentations de la Vierge dans les arts et les littératures du Moyen Age, furent expressément placées sous le signe de la pluridisciplinarité ; elles ont réuni des chercheurs venus d?horizons divers. Historiens, historiens de l?art, spécialistes des littératures française, anglaise, occitane, catalane se sont employés à défricher des champs encore peu visités et à approfondir de nouvelles thématiques.
